Breaking News: Employment survey shows jobs decline
Jobs in Bermuda fell by nearly 700 between 2008 and 2009.
The number of jobs held by Bermudians decreased by 391 in that period, while positions held by guest workers reduced by 435.
The numbers were revealed in the 2010 edition of the Bermuda Job Market Employment Briefs.
Released by the Department of Statistics today, it highlights the main findings of the 2009 Annual Employment Survey.
Among the findings:
l There were 39,520 jobs counted in 2009 compared to 40,213 in 2008
l Men and women reported job losses of 413 and 280, respectively, from the previous year
l Employment levels in the hotel industry continued to decline, moving from 2,942 in 2008 to 2,719 in 2009
l The construction industry held 3,488 positions in 2009 — a loss of 161 jobs or a four percent decline from 3,649 jobs posted in 2008
l Business services sector employment dipped by 129 positions, or three percent, from 2008.
