Breaking News: Cox found guilty of triple shooting, cleared of conspiracy to murder

A jury today found 26-year-old Cervio Cox guilty of a triple shooting on Court Street last May, but not guilty of conspiracy to murder in relation to those shootings.

Cox, of Clarendon Road, Smith’s, was found guilty of wounding the three injured men with intent to do them grievous bodily harm.

They were 16-year-old Parkside gang associate J’Dun Thompson and Raymond Burgess Jr. and Sr. — two innocent men caught in the crossfire when J’Dun ran into their shop to hide.

However Cox was cleared of conspiring with unknown persons to murder J’Dun and he was cleared of using a firearm against father and son, Mr. Burgess Sr. and Jr.

Prosecutors alleged Cox was an associate of the 42 gang, and the shootings were retribution that was part of a running street war between 42 and their rivals Parkside.

It was never alleged that he was the shooter, who was described by eyewitnesses as a Jamaican man. However, Cox, the only person on trial, was alleged to have been the getaway driver or to have loaned his vehicle to the culprit.

Prosecutors said that even though Cox was not the person that pulled the trigger he was still criminally responsible for the injuries caused to the victims through being an accomplice in the overall crime.

The verdict came after five-and-a-half hours of deliberation by the jury this afternoon. Cox is due to be sentenced at 12 p.m. tomorrow.
