Five-star Town

Depressingly poor defensive work by home side Paget Lions enabled visiting Dandy Town to snatch the three vital points they desperately needed in order claw their way to a more respectable position in the Premier Division yesterday.

Hovering in the lower portion of the table, Town can now take aim for the upper half hopeful that this positive result is the sort of tonic needed to rejuvenate their squad.

For Lions it was a frustrating result, especially after they had virtually matched ? and probably gained territorial advantage ? over their opponents in the opening half before falling behind 2-0 when the first 45 minutes ended. Michael Parsons led the goal onslaught with two strikes while Lashun Dill, Heys Wolfe and veteran Carlos Smith each netted once.

Lions took the game to Town early with forward Travis Wilkinson mis-kicking when in position to get a shot on goal from close in after just two minutes. Further sustained pressure led to four corners for the Lions within the space of two minutes and then player-coach Marvin Belboda endured a huge miss when he shot at advancing goalkeeper Cymande Davis from close range after 14 minutes.

Town slowly came into the game and found some momentum and after 20 minutes Parsons outpaced two defenders only to watch in agony as his defence-splitting cross went untouched just a few yards from goal.

With the Lions still holding a slight edge Town struck during a counter attack, Dill putting them ahead with the game 29 minutes old after the first of many lapses in the Lions? defence.

Two minutes later Dill forced goalkeeper Wayne Smith to dive to smother his firm shot from 14 yards. Lions started to look sloppier in defence but remained a threat during counter-attacks ? most of which were spearheaded by hard-working Belboda in midfield.

But Town were sharper up front when it counted, the veteran Smith sending a cross high to the middle for Dill, whose poorly headed effort from close sailed inches wide after 31 minutes.

Then a minute before the break Parsons hammered home the second from 17 yards as a stunned defence stood in total amazement, arguing with each other.

The second half saw the Lions ruthlessly torn apart as they tired and could find no answer to their more enterprising opponents. Wolfe hammered home the third after 60 minutes but Lions responded with Belboda missing from a few yards in one of the home side?s rare assaults on goal.

From then on it was all Town, with Smith scoring the fourth after 70 minutes and Parsons the fifth after 85 minutes.W.Smith; D.Steede, K.Outerbridge (N.Simons, 62 min), T.Brown, K.Tucker (R.Lee, 62 min), A.Anderson, Y.Pitt, M.Belboda, A.Bean (O.Frederick, 73 min), D.Blyden, T.Wilkinson.C.Davis; J.Peniston, D.Binns (C.Anderson, 52 min), D.Lawler (M.Lowe, 62 min), D.Zuill, O.Steede, M.Parsons, S.Tuzo, H.Wolfe, C.Smith, L.Dill (M.Smith, 62 min).
