Goater scores twice as City stun United
Bermuda's Shaun Goater scored twice as Manchester City stunned Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday to record their first win over their bitter rivals for 13 years and bless Maine Road with the perfect send-off in the last ever derby at the ground.
Shaun Goater, the Bermudian international who began his career in United's reserves, plundered two goals to take his tally for City to the 100 mark after United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had cancelled out Nicolas Anelka's early opener.
But while the blue half of the city were celebrating a famous win ahead of their move to a new stadium next season, United could not hide their embarrassment after a shambolic display, Reuters reported.
United captain Gary Neville, responsible for City's second goal, and Juan Sebastian Veron, the ineffective 28 million pounds midfielder, were substituted in the second half in a gesture which spoke volumes for manager Alex Ferguson's feelings.
United are still eight points behind league leaders Liverpool with the rest of the English premier league programme to come later on Saturday.
The 127th league meeting between City and United attracted as much pre-match hype as any other in a rivalry spanning more than 100 years.
It was the first time they had come face-to-face since the controversy surrounding Roy Keane's clash with City midfielder Alf-Inge Haaland in April 2001.
Reuters said the cacophony of boos from a passionate home crowd that sensed blood turned to cheers inside just five minutes.
Not only did United lose possession in midfield, but Anelka exposed Rio Ferdinand's lack of pace before supplying Goater.
The striker saw his weak shot turned away unconvincingly by Fabien Barthez, only for Frenchman Anelka to follow up and score.
United were grateful for more hapless defending from City as they levelled.
Kevin Keegan's side had led for just four minutes when Richard Dunne and Gerard Wiekens both went for a challenge on Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The loose ball broke to Ryan Giggs, whose cross eluded Lucien Mettomo and Solskjaer was free on the far post to sidefoot past Schmeichel.
Thereafter, United appeared to have settled, but they were reeling from another defensive mistake after 27 minutes which will haunt Gary Neville for a long time.
Neville was caught between shepherding Marc-Vivien Foe's mishit pass out of play and passing back to his goalkeeper, but he misjudged the pace of the ball and Goater robbed him on the byline before driving a shot past Barthez.
Anelka then wasted a glorious chance to make it three, but after racing clear, Barthez redeemed himself by parrying his shot to safety.
There was no such luck for United six minutes after the break.
Veron and Phil Neville were overrun in midfield as Eyal Berkovic played in Goater, who held off a challenge and drew Barthez before delicately lifting the ball over the France international.
Peter Schmeichel saved well from a Giggs header and a van Nistelrooy flick, while the Dutch striker had a penalty appeal turned down and substitute John O'Shea unbelievably missed from a metre out.
Bermuda star Goater was signed by Ferguson after United toured Bermuda and spent several years in the reserves before being transferred to Rotherham United.
After a spell at Bristol City, he moved to Manchester City and helped lead them to promotion to Division One and twice to the Premiership.
He only recently regained a starting spot alongside Anelka, but today's two goals may go a long way to securing his spot when manager Kevin Keegan makes out his team lists for the rest of the season.
