Butterfield steps up his preparations for Worlds

Tyler Butterfield is going through his final preparations in readiness for next month's World Triathlon Championships.

The race takes place in Cancun, Mexico on November 9 and Butterfield will be just one of several Bermudians taking part.

Butterfield, who has been training with top Australian triathlete Chris McCormack in recent months in Europe is now back in Australia where he is based.

"I'm now on the Gold Coast of Australia," he said. "Training is going awesome and things are really looking good for the World Championships in five weeks.

"But in five weeks a lot can happen, so I just have to try to keep the training up and rest when I'm tired. Over-training is always an easy trap to fall into when you're motivated."

As well as taking part in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, Butterfield also competed in the prestigious Lausanne World Cup and the Credit Suisse races this year.

Since then he has not competed but has concentrated on honing his skills with Mexico as the focus.

"It's just been training hard, base miles and less rest," he said. "Once you start racing you have to take more rest."

He is taking part in two lesser events as the weeks draw on though.

"They are small but you never know who will show," he said. "Sometimes the best pros will decide to do it for training.

"The races are not a big objective and I'm only doing it for training too but you always go out there and give it your all. That is why it is such good thing to do."

The first race is part of a series called The Look Series and is a sprint consisting of a 500 metre swim, 20K bike and 5K run.

"It is short but it gets your speed up and makes you fast," said Butterfield. "Plus it gets you in the motion of connecting all three disciplines together." The second race is part of the Bribe Island Series.

"This race is the proper sprint distance, of 750 metre swim, 20K bike and 5K run - the same distance that I will have to complete later this year in Cancun," said Butterfield.
