Brewer causes an upset

Richard Brewer caused a shock at the Shell Divisional Handicap squash tournament last night when he saw off Mel Caines in straight games, writes Matt Westcott.

Caines started the quarter final tie at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association with a deficit of six points but it was not really a factor in Brewer's victory.

"He dominated the game from start to finish," said Bermuda's director of squash Ross Triffitt.

"Mel really had trouble finding his rhythm and getting into the match."

Brewer won the first game 15-4, the second 15-7 and the third 15-11.

"In the third and final game Mel tried to pick the pace up and take the ball earlier and put Richard under more pressure, but by then it was already too late and Richard was able to continue on his winning way."

In other quarter final action on Tuesday night last year's champion Nick Wiffen beat Stephen Smith in straight games, 15-11, 15-10, 15-7.

"Wiffen controlled the match throughout with Stephen unable to hit the ball tight. He was able to dominate the play and put the ball away with ease," said Triffitt.

"Stephen looked a little rusty and has been suffering from a hand injury which he will be having surgery on in a few weeks time. That fact helped Nick seal the result in straight games."

With the quarter finals over Tommy Sherratt now plays James Stout in the first semi-final this evening in what should be an intriguing contest between two national team players. The match gets underway at 7.20 p.m.

The other semi final between Brewer and Wiffen will be played tomorrow at 6 p.m.
