In-form Scott eager to impress
If form is anything to go by then watch out for Wayne Scott at this week's CD&P Grand Prix.
The Florida-based Islander is currently riding high in the state's standings and will be part of a talented team which will tackle the four-day event which starts on Thursday night.
Scott will be joined by Mercury rider Bryce Jones, Ralph Clemente and Mike Zingaro and will race under the Volkswagen Trek/Cyclescience banner.
The event comes in the thick of the Bermudian's season and he is looking to impress on home soil before heading back to the US.
"I took a couple of weeks off in the summer because in Florida we start racing early. I have been racing since the end of January, the beginning of February.
"The time off allowed me to prepare for our Fall stretch which is very difficult in Florida," he said from his base in Orlando.
"I am currently in fifth place in the state's Pro One/Two rankings and am trying my hardest to stay there over the last few weekends. I am racing basically right up until the Caribbean Championships (in Curacao in October), my last race in Florida being the weekend before that."
Scott's position represents one of his best, if not his best, year in the saddle.
"Being fifth in the Pro One/Two here in Florida is a very big deal because it's very tough," he said.
A change in his preparations is partly responsible for his performances.
"I have devoted a lot more time to it this year and have continued to work on strength training and trimming my weight a bit. It has been very difficult to do, holding down a full-time job and having a family," he said.
Because of the heightened profile of the CD&P Grand Prix in the US, Scott had no shortage of people from which to draw on for his team.
"This race in Bermuda is gaining a lot more popularity in the States and it's something that guys are talking about a lot in racing circles," he said.
"Ralph is a Category One rider in Florida and a couple of years ago he had an invitation to do Olympic trials, so he is very accomplished. Mike is also an elite level racer riding for a Division Three pro team.
"Bryce rides for Mercury normally but they have allowed him to ride in this composite team as they are sending one of their own. That will be interesting because he is normally (Mercury rider) Gord Fraser's lead-out man."
Scott believes his team can do well, but he is conscious of the fact that he still has a lot of competing ahead of him.
"Thursday night's race is very important," he said of the Front Street Grand Prix. "Riding for the national team is a very big deal for Bermuda so I would like to do well there, but on the other hand I don't want to totally burn myself out over the rest of the weekend because every race I have left is a pro level race. I then have the Caribbean Championships so I have a lot of very hard racing left."
