Premier condemns gun murder of 29-year-old man
Police this afternoon launched a murder inquiry after a 29-year-old man was shot in broad daylight in Somerset.Dozens of onlookers surrounded Mangrove Bay area after the shooting took place at a house in the area around 2 pm.Traffic was halted in both directions and according to Police Media Spokesman Dwayne Caines it will be a long wait until people can pass through.Mr Caines said: "A few minutes after 2pm we responded to a report of a confirmed firearm incident that took place at the junction of Somerset Road and East Shore Road."Upon police arrival it was ascertained a male was found in an non-responsive position."This commenced the investigation of what we believe to be a murder investigation."He said there was a 200 meter cordon in the area and advised people to make alternative travel decisions as there will be a long delay.Reacting to the news a few minutes ago, Bermuda Democratic Alliance MP Mark Pettingill told MPs in the House: "I regret to inform the Honourable House that I have confirmation that yet another young man has lost his life as a result of a shooting in the quiet sanctuary of Mangrove Bay, in Somerset."He said that such incidents are "the biggest crisis we face".He added: "We must continue to do all we can to alter this tragic course and direction."Premier Paula Cox told the House: "The murder of another individual is not just sad but it's disgusting". She spoke of the importance of cross party partnership to tackle the issue.She later issued a statement condemning the shooting.“The cycle of violent behaviour continues to permeate through our community and another life has been lost. We certainly extend our sympathy to the family of the young man who has died.“Our community must understand that we will continually suffer until we foster a no-tolerance for crime and demand that perpetrators as well as those who enable them are held accountable. Only a rebuilding of respect for human life and the rule of law can restore a sense of well-being to our home.“We all play a part; the Government in a pragmatic, focused way and citizens in their willingness to come forward with what it is they know."Acting Minister of National Security Michael Weeks echoed community sentiments in condemning this latest shooting.He said in a statement this afternoon: “First and foremost I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. It is terribly disheartening that we continue to experience these wonton acts of violence, which has resulted in yet another senseless death."What makes today's incident particularly disturbing is that it took place in broad daylight, in a community where people were going about their daily routines.“I understand that the investigation is in its very early stages, and I want to assure the Bermuda Police Service that this Government stands firmly behind them and will ensure that the necessary assistance and support is provided to them so that they can bring the offenders of this heinous crime to justice.“Finally I want to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who may have any information about this afternoon's shooting to please share that information with the Police. If you wish to share your information anonymously, you can do so by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-TIPS (8477) or via the Crime Stoppers website at www.crimestoppers.bm.”And Attorney General Michael Scott said: "After a welcomed lull in gun shootings the tranquility of Mangrove Bay has been shattered by a gun fatality similar to that which have left other parts of our community traumatized."I offer my sincere condolences to the family of the young man who has lost his life and urge persons with information about this incident to contact the police."Police issued a statement which said: "Around 2pm on Friday, police responded to a confirmed firearm incident in the area of Somerset Road and East Shore Road in Sandys."A 29-year-old Warwick man was shot and subsequently died as a result of his injuries. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified."An active investigation into this incident is underway. The area has been cordoned off and traffic delays are anticipated in the area of Somerset Post Office and Somerset Country Squire until further notice."We are asking for the indulgence of the businesses in the area and the motoring public while the investigation is ongoing."The Bermuda Police Service is aware that an alleged picture of the victim is being circulated via the internet; however the pictured individual is not the victim."We are in the early stages of this investigation and urge the public not to disseminate any unofficial information which has not been verified by the authorities."Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crimes Unit on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
