Clubs willing to embrace innovative two-day game
Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) officials are extremely pleased with the response to the new two-day cricket format.
Following a meeting with clubs on Thursday night, BCB president Reggie Pearman said things went ?quite well? and everyone left with the resolve to embrace the two-day game which brings an innovative look to the Island?s cricket.
?We know we will have some teething problems. Most players have never played under this system before but they are willing to try it. It?s really commendable that the clubs are doing this,? said Pearman, thanking the BCB?s Technical Committee for being the architects of the new structure.
Saleem Mukuddem, a member of the Technical Committee, praised the clubs which attended for their input but lamented the fact that some clubs were missing. Their absence, he noted, meant ?they lost out in being involved in the initial discussions?.
Still, much good was accomplished, he told .
?The questions were constructive and had practical implications. I enjoyed responding to them because it meant the guys were actually thinking about the game. That went very well,? said Mukuddem.
?We stressed that it?s a new format and a lot of guys in Bermuda would not have played in this situation before.
?Umpires are going to have to remind teams of certain rules once we start playing. Teams will realise they have to keep track of things like match points and bonus points.?
He added that cricketing terms that are rarely used here like ?declaration? and ?follow-on? may become more relevant.
Meanwhile, the new season starts tomorrow ? a week behind schedule ? with limited-overs action, featuring three games in the Premier Division and four in the First Division.
Defending top-flight champions Southampton Rangers travel to Lord?s to meet St. David?s in the day?s main fixture while St. George?s entertain newly-promoted Bailey?s Bay at Wellington Oval.
Devonshire Recreation Club, also just promoted from the First Division, take on Willow Cuts at Devonshire. The other Premier match between Western Stars and Cleveland has been postponed as the wicket at St. John?s Field is not ready.
In the First Division, the two teams relegated from the Premier Division will play each other with Somerset hosting PHC.
Other match-ups have Warwick playing Leg Trappers at Southampton Oval, Somerset Bridge taking on Flatts at White Hill and Police battling Social Club at home.
The Commercial Cricket League season gets under way tomorrow with last year?s two top teams ? league champions Forties and knockout winners Jamaican Association ? competing for the new Players? Memorial Trophy at Sea Breeze Oval.
The old League Cup format will be used for the 40 overs-a-side match starting at 12.30 p.m. in which bowlers are limited to five overs each.
The new trophy was donated by North Village, initially in memory of their 38-year-old fast bowler Derek Bell who died in a boating accident two years ago, but the club decided they wanted the trophy to embrace all Commercial League players who have passed away.
The first round of league matches will begin on Sunday, May 16.
