Goater keeps pressure on
Move over Robbie Fowler - Shaun Goater still believes he is one of the two top strikers at Manchester City.
Goater has been forced to play second fiddle to Fowler since his arrival at Maine Road from Leeds United.
But the Bermudian is hoping for a change in fortunes tomorrow when City take on Spurs in the Premiership.
City boss Kevin Keegan finally lost patience with his misfiring starting duo of Nicolas Anelka and Fowler last weekend during the game with Middlesbrough. He threw on Goater and Jon Macken in their place and although they couldn't break the deadlock, the game ending goalless, Keegan acknowledged their presence had given City "a foothold" on the game.
The respected English soccer website, www.planetfootball.com quoted Goater as saying he would continue to put pressure on Keegan to pick him.
"I still see myself as one of the top two strikers at City," he was quoted as saying. "If I thought I was third or fourth choice I couldn't prepare myself mentally.
"But I've always enjoyed a challenge and I'm up for trying to keep new people out of the team.
"If I play as well as I can, I'm as good as most players and that's what makes me look at the task ahead and go for it. It's up to the manager, and the only way to persuade him of my worth is when I get the chance."
Kyle Lightbourne's Macclesfield Town have almost certainly secured their Football League status following a fine 3-2 win over Shrewsbury on Tuesday night.
The Silkmen had been flirting with relegation into the Conference for much of the season but a recent unbeaten run has seen them pull away from the drop zone.
Tuesday's victory saw them move up to 16th place out of 24 teams on 48 points. The bottom two sides go down at the end of the season. Shrewsbury and Exeter currently occupy those spots with 41 and 38 points respectively.
