Bromby improves at regatta

Having made a few adjustments overnight to their new boat, Bermudian sailors Peter Bromby and Martin Siese enjoyed better fortune on the second day of the Star European Spring Championship in Mallorca yesterday.

They placed ninth and have moved up from 13th into 11th position overall.

"Today was a pretty encouraging result after yesterday (Wednesday) when we were using our new boat for the first time," said Bromby. "We made some changes to it and things went a lot better today. After a bad start, we got to the first mark in 25th position and then we came back through the fleet pretty hard to finish ninth. We were going quite a bit faster than we were yesterday."

The 72-boat regatta is now at the half-way stage with two more races scheduled for today and the final race on Sunday. Bromby thinks it unlikely that they can emerge victorious but is still hoping to be among the front-runners.

"With the two bad races at the beginning it's going to be very difficult to win this regatta. We're going to have to rely on some mistakes from the leaders but they have been sailing quite consistently.

"Right now, I think a realistic goal for us is to try and break into the top five. If we can do that we'll be pretty happy," he said.
