Man gave Police wrong name

A man who gave a false identity to Police to try to escape arrest was nabbed anyway after choosing the name of someone also wanted by detectives.

William Eugene Oral Robinson admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice when he appeared at Magistrates? Court on Monday.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said officers stopped Robinson last Friday in Devonshire and asked him for his name and date of birth. She said the name he gave was for a man for whom there was a warrant outstanding.

Robinson told the court he gave the false identity because he knew there were warrants out for his own arrest and he did not have the money to pay outstanding fines.

The 45-year-old, of Berkeley Road, Pembroke, also admitted speeding at 70kph on January 16 and drug possession on October 28, 2005.

Ms Clarke said Robinson was arrested by Police in North Street, Pembroke, last October after they saw him throw a package into a hedge. It was later found to contain 12.26 grams of cannabis.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,750 in total and ordered him to pay by November 17.
