Final Sustainable Development forum tonight

Road tolling, reducing water consumption and the future of the cruise ship industry in Bermuda are among the topics which will come under the spotlight at a public meeting this evening. The final sustainable development forum ? exploring the fifth theme of the Government?s draft blueprint for the future of the Island ? will take place at St. Paul?s AME Church from 6 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

The theme, Living within Bermuda?s Limits, looks at how the Government ? and Islanders ? can help to ensure that Bermuda?s resources don?t run out for future generations. Erica Smith, sustainable development director, urged people to attend the meeting and give their views. Five guest panellists will also discuss the topics and answer questions from the audience.

?These are huge issues,? said Ms Smith. ?The discussion of them will give Bermudians some idea of the issues that face us. These are things that we have to consider for our future. ?We have 62,000 people and an island which is 21 square miles. Our current trends can?t continue if we want to be both environmentally and socially conscious.?

Tonight?s meeting will be moderated by Bill Zuill, Editor of . The panellists debating the theme will be: Robert Stewart, company director, author and critic of the sustainable development plan; ecological engineer Dr. Pauulu Kamarakafego (formerly Dr. Roosevelt Brown); Tom Wadson, a farmer and member of the Sustainable Development Round Table; Allan Hunt, former solid waste manager for the Ministry of Works and Engineering and president of Clean Islands International and Linda Smith Wilson, Belco?s vice-president for external relations and corporate communications.
