Opposition concerned over spate of burglaries

Deputy Opposition Leader Michael Dunkley is calling on Police to keep crime victims fully briefed after a series of burglaries around the Island.

Mr. Dunkley said he had received numerous calls from members of the public whose homes had been broken into in recent weeks.

?There has been a tremendous amount of break-ins on the Island recently,? he said. ?I have had so many calls about this. It is the number one issue that people are complaining about.

?These guys have gotten very brazen and are doing it in broad daylight.

?One of the most frequent ways is by kicking in the window air conditioning.?

Mr. Dunkley said that four homes had recently been burgled in Cameron Close in the space of three days.

?I know of incidents in Warwickshire, Paget, Devonshire and Smith?s,? he said. ?It?s getting to be very, very widespread. It?s not like they are going into one neighbourhood. They are going in over a continuous period of time.?

He added: ?One of the most frustrating things is that they never seem to get any follow-up on what?s taken place. People are saying ?I?ll take the law into my own hands?. These people are fit to be tied.

?I don?t want to beat the Police up because as they are investigating these break-ins they have been very professional. Everyone has been happy with the service. But what is a real concern to me and the people is that there is no feedback on what?s happening.?

Bermuda Police Service spokesman Robin Simmons said: ?We haven?t been shy about the fact that there have been quite a few burglaries taking place as of late.

?There are burglaries that have occurred and are occurring across the Island. It?s not just one area that has been targeted.

?Obviously, we are doing our utmost to apprehend the culprits and when we do apprehend them they will be placed before the courts.?
