Release of air con gases into air illegal, officials warn

A reminder on the safe handling of air conditioning refrigerants was tonight issued by the Government.

A spokesman warned that release of the gases, which damage the environment, was illegal.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning system technicians who deal with refrigerant gases must be trained and carry a valid certified technician card from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The list of technicians is posted online at the government website.

Technicians should produce certification and also carry a reclamation unit to collect refrigerant gases instead of releasing the harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.

There should be one unit at each job site.

Technicians should give a quote for reclaiming and safely storing the gases.

If no additional cost is listed, technicians could be illegally venting the gases into the air.

Anyone with questions or concerns should e-mail to pollutioncontrol@gov.bm.
