Lessons for seniors on the benefits and pitfalls of social media
Seniors can learn about using social media online at a Safer Internet Day tomorrow.
The free, annual event hosted by the Government will be at St Paul’s African Methodist Church’s Centennial Hall, from 10am until 2pm.
A spokesman said that the session was designed to inform seniors “in an interactive and fun way about the many benefits – but also pitfalls – of internet use”.
He added: “Through workshops and activities, the message stays clear: embrace the internet but stay mindful.”
Ray Jones, the Government’s economic development director, said: “We’re all using the internet more than ever, including our seniors, who are undeniably a key component of our society.
“Therefore, we must engage with them in a conversation about how to safely and securely use the Internet so that they can benefit from this technology and understand the risk involved.”
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, will open the event, which will include information from Medical House about safety at home.
Marley Simons, of Clarien Bank, will talk about safe online banking, and Stephanie Lee, of SocialLee, will cover Facebook and other online platforms.
Alexander White, the Privacy Commissioner, will speak about the importance of protecting personal information.
Other speakers include Kenisha Shakir, from the Bermuda National Library, who will talk about digital books, as well as Krishna Singh, of the Bermuda Police Service, who will highlight online fraud and internet safety.
Guests will be asked to have their temperature checked at the door and masks will be needed for entry and when moving about the venue.
A light lunch will be served.
