Rangers continue to dominate Bay

Photograph by Akil SimmonsAnother one bites the dust: Tucker, centre, the Rangers captain, celebrates with his team-mates after taking the wicket of Stephen Outerbridge at Sea Breeze Oval

Janeiro Tucker and Dion Stovell shared in a match-winning third-wicket stand of 141 at Sea Breeze Oval on Sunday as Southampton Rangers clinched their third victory over Bailey’s Bay this season in three different competitions.

Set a target of 201 to win by the home team, Rangers lost a couple of early wickets when new signing Oronde Bascome was trapped by Malachi Jones for eight on his Rangers debut and Alex Dore departed for one.

Just before Dore was dismissed, Rangers lost Curtis Jackson to a leg injury rather than a catch when Stephen Outerbridge put down a comfortable chance at backward square leg off Jones.

Jackson went off immediately, bringing Stovell to the crease, followed soon by Tucker, the team’s captain, as the two set about repairing the early damage.

Some tight bowling, initially, made runs difficult to come by for the Rangers pair, but scoring at four runs an over they did not need to panic and the two Bermuda batsman played disciplined innings’, posting 136 by the 35th over and 166 after 43. Tucker won the match with 2.2 overs remaining when he straight drove Kyle Hodsoll for four.

It was Hodsoll who broke the partnership, trapping Stovell lbw for 66 in his first over. Stovell faced 108 balls and hit seven fours before departing on 162 for three.

Tucker hit some important boundaries late in the match, including taking ten off one over from David Lovell to push the score to 180. His 80 not out came off 114 balls and included seven fours and a six.

Bay wicketkeeper Sinclair Smith, standing up to the stumps, put down a sharp chance off Dennico Hollis’s bowling when Tucker got an edge with the score on 84, which proved to be costly.

Terryn Fray, another player playing his first match of the season, led the Bay batting with 52, while captain Trott scored 32 and player-coach Irving Romaine hit 32 as Bay started to accelerate their scoring late in the innings.

They slumped to 161 for nine before an unbroken last-wicket stand of 39 between Hodsoll and Zeko Burgess brought up the 200.

Tucker, sharing the new ball with Derrick Brangman, got the breakthrough when he removed Outerbridge for two with 23 runs on the board.

*Dennico Hollis was confirmed last week as a late transfer by the Bermuda Cricket Board, returning to Bay after playing one match for Somerset.
