'Global village' will honour Human Rights

The Ministry of Culture will be holding various events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the universal declaration of Human Rights signed on December 10, 1948.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, Minister of Culture, Dale Butler said in order to commemorate the anniversary, the Human Rights Commission will be holding a global village on Saturday, at the Par-La-Ville Park with the theme, 'One World, One People'.

The event will feature multicultural dancing and music, a speaker's corner, a community mural and artists' mural.

People from various ethnicities will be setting up stalls to display and sell food products that exemplify their culture. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Human Rights Commission also held a writing and poster competition for students between the ages of four and 24.

Mr. Butler said: "We commend students and principals for getting involved in this very worthwhile venture."

The Human Rights Commission will be celebrating the actual Human Rights Day on Wednesday, December 10, at BUEI between 12.30 p.m. and 2 p.m. with a light luncheon and awards ceremony for the winners of the writing and poster competition.

The grand prize will be a draw for a trip to the United Nations for one student and chaperone.

The Minister added: "I urge everyone to come and support the Human Rights Commission in marking the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights."
