Eve: Bermuda won’t stop believing

Game face: Dale Eve, the Bermuda goalkeeper, is hoping Bermuda can earn a point against Mexico in Toluca tomorrow

Dale Eve says Bermuda are “ready for war” as they aim to pull off their greatest upset away to Mexico in their final League A group game in the Concacaf Nations League tomorrow.Mexico eased to a 3-0 victory in Panama on Friday to not only secure top spot in group B, but also in turn put Bermuda’s relegation fate back into their own hands, with only a point needed to finish above Panama in the three-team group and retain their status in the top flight.Despite the form guide suggesting a draw being a long shot, with the Gold Cup champions thrashing Bermuda 5-1 at the National Sports Centre last month, Eve is adamant his side hold no fear of their opposition who are ranked twelfth in the Fifa world rankings.“Bermuda has never backed down from a battle,” the goalkeeper said. “We know it will be a really tough match, but we’re ready for war. We won’t fear anyone. We know they have a strong squad full of good individuals, but that doesn’t worry us. On the night it will be 11 versus 11 and that’s what matters.“Of course, there are things we can do to stop those moments of individual brilliance that we saw in the first game against us. Football is a game of intelligence and strategy. Once you figure your opponents moves, you can change how a player or team plays at any level of the game. “Each and every one of us whether starting the game, coming on as a substitute, coaches, physio, everyone has an equally important role and will play their part in contributing to the overall outcome of the match.“The team all sat together to watch the Panama and Mexico game, a bit like when Leicester City were waiting to see if they had won the Premier League! “That game ending 3-0 brings us that much closer to Panama, just one goal difference, and that was the exact motivation we needed.”Not only can Bermuda take motivation from that result, Eve also cited their 2-0 victory away to Panama, having suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture, as a cause for greater optimism, although he is well aware of the task in hand.“We definitely can take confidence from the result away to Panama,” Eve added. “We know what we are capable of and strangely we seem to perform better way from home under bigger pressure. We love the bigger pressure situations.“Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s any chance of Mexico underestimating us. They’re an extremely professional side and I’m in no doubt that they won’t take any chances. Getting a point would certainly be a big result; it would give us what we need to remain on track for our overall goal.“Staying in League A would mean everything. It would give us all more opportunities to showcase what our small island has to offer and playing against better opposition will only make us better as a team.” Sam Murley travelled to Toluca, Mexico, thanks to sponsorship from Living Legends @living.legends.bda
