A working partnership
Chamber of Commerce Business Technology Division chairman Ronald Viera and vice chairman Vicki Coelho sat down to talk about the objectives behind Techweek.
Mr. Viera explained that the division had been in existence for about eight years, and had evolved during that time.
“It started when e-commerce was the buzz word, so we were the E-commerce Division for a little while, but then we changed it to Business Technology, as it broadened our scope. It started with about ten committee members from a broad cross-section of technology service providers.
“Then we also had good representation from the Ministry (of Telecommunications and E-Commerce) as well. They have always participated and been very helpful and have offered a lot in the way of information and opportunities for members to contribute back to Government as well.
“We helped out with the Transactions Act and we were involved with the Data Protection roundtable discussions as well. We are currently involved in the revision of the Electronic Transactions Act.”
Ms Coelho said that more than a year ago, the Division started discussing a trade show that would highlight what technology meant to both businesses and the residential population.
“So we were working on that event and at the same time the Ministry wanted to highlight technology and at that time they came up with a theme of Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace.
“So we thought it was best to support their initiative and have May 7 as the kick off of Techweek and we are hosting the event at Fairmont Hamilton.
At the time of the interview there were 24 exhibitors lined up.
Another event that is going on during the week is our signature event called Wired Wednesday at the Chamber.
“It has been going on for the last two to three years and it is has quite a reputation within the industry.
“People look for it every month and a company sponsors or provides the beverages. They then give a presentation on something that they might be coming out with or whatever services are available.
“This one is being sponsored by the Chamber itself, as we haven’t done one since the first one ... so we felt it appropriate to do it this week and hopefully rejuvenate interest in it.”
Asked if Techweek would become an annual event, Ms Coelho said: “Hopefully it is going to be successful and from there we can make plans.”
Mr. Viera added: “Obviously there is a lot of work that goes into it, and also the vendors have to see what sort of value they get out of it, because it is just not financial, it is manpower as well.”
