Stars wrap up Premier title -- Skipper Steede blasts century
Western Stars 198-3 Western Stars confirmed themselves as Premier Division champions following yesterday's emphatic three wicket triumph over Flatts at Devonshire Rec.
And, as has been the case all season long, captain Albert Steede led the way, smashing yet another century for the St. John's Road outfit.
Steede tormented Flatts bowlers to the tune of 102 not out from 104 balls, including nine fours and five sixes.
The opener participated in a stand of 82 for the third wicket with Ricky Brangman (32) and an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 57 with South African import Saleem Mukudem (20 not out).
Earlier Flatts owed their total to a knock of 41 from skipper Rahji Edness, while Andrew Richardson (35) and Gershon Gibbons (29) also made useful contributions.
Stars now stand alone on 60 points from 12 matches -- 12 points clear of nearest challengers St. George's, while having 15 points on defending champs Southampton and St. David's.
The Islanders can mathematically pull even on points, but would need Stars to lose their remaining two matches and would still lose the tie-break that is decided by head-to-head meetings.
Social Club 132 Devonshire 133-2 Devonshire Rec predictably eased past Social Club, beating the home side by eight wickets at St. John's field.
A rampant half century by Wendell Swan combined with an earlier five-wicket haul from Omar Amory keyed the victory.
Amory baffled Social Club with his off-breaks, returning figures of five for 49, while Maurice Steede and captain Winston Trott each bagged two wickets.
Cecil Tucker top scored for the home team with 26, while H.Clarke tallied 22 as Social reached a respectable 132.
However, Swan soon put paid to any miraculous notions of victory as he stroked his way to an unbeaten 65, finding the boundary line early and often, registering eight fours and a six.
Darrin Davis aided in the destruction with 32 before being run out.
St. David's 261-8 Police 128-7 Police paid the ultimate price for a slow over rate and scoring rate, as they all but handed this win to St. David's.
A well played 71 by skipper Clay Smith combined with 41 runs each from the bats of O.J. Pitcher and Lionel Cann saw the Islanders post a large, but attainable total.
Dwayne Leverock seized three wickets, while Dave Greenidge and Freston Hurdle each bagged two.
However, having completed their overs in a slow fashion, Police found their problems compounded further as they were given just 44 overs to play with.
They then found themselves struggling at 60 for four, at which point they appeared to give up the chase, preferring batting practice instead.
Andrew Rollins ended as top bat with 42, while Dwayne Leverock finished on 24 not out.
Sammy Robinson and Del Hollis both took a pair of scalps.
Southampton 311 Bailey's Bay 213 A day after being forced to field under the beaming sun for some seven hours during the Eastern Counties, Bailey's Bay had little left to offer a fresh Southampton outfit.
And, as fate would have it, Bay were sent to the field again and forced to endure Rangers mount what ultimately proved too tall a task.
In the end Bay succumbed meekly to the home side's score of 312, the visitors being bundled out for 213 in reply.
Keith Wainwright starred in the batting department for the home side, registering 103 as he and Olin Jones put on an opening partnership of 135.
Wainwright hit out for 11 fours and six sixes in his knock, while Jones' 47 consisted of seven fours.
Also getting among the runs for Rangers were captain Janeiro Tucker, who hit a rapid 55, with 38 runs via the boundary route.
Ricky Hill took six wickets, but gave up 63 runs in getting them.
Bay rarely threatened, with Jermaine Warner their brightest spot, scoring 41, while Hill (38), Anthony Braithwaite (31) and Noel Gibbons (29) were their next best.
Tucker returned figures of three for 46, while Garry Williams and Olin Jones each bagged two wickets.
St. George's 220-9 Willow Cuts 158 Skipper Herbie Bascome stroked 61 and opener Dexter Smith hit 53 to lead St.
George's to a 62-run victory over hosts Willow Cuts at Somerset.
Kevin Fubler was the leading bowler for Cuts with two for nine from 10 overs, while Bergon Spencer took two for 38 and Steval Mendes two for 44.
Trevor Forth made a spirited 55 in reply and young Sheroy Fubler chipped in with 24, but few others managed at stay at the wicket long enough to make a significant contribution for Cuts.
Mackie Crane and Graham Fox each took three for 40 while Steede claimed two for 34.
PHC 212 Warwick 147 Ten year-old Marquel Waldron got the final wicket with the third ball of the last over to dismiss Warwick and lead PHC to this 65-run victory at Sea Breeze Oval.
Waldron had number 10 bat Darren Anglin caught at long-off to finish off a tough day for Warwick who toiled with 10 players.
Sheridan Ming was top bat for PHC with 53 while Charles Symons struck 31, Arthur Richards 28, Ty Williams 27 and Antoine Green 23.
Warwick skipper Reginald Pitcher led his team's bowling with four for 61 from nine overs while Daniel Caines had two for 36 and Steven Bremer two for 37.
Daniel Morgan was top bat for Warwick with 56 while Pitcher followed with 20.
Charles Symons had three for 12 from six overs and K.Tucker two for 29 from nine overs with two maidens.
Cleveland 145-4 Somerset 135 Skipper Aaron Adams snatched five for 20 off just 6.1 overs to lead Cleveland to this 10-run victory over a 10-man Somerset team at Wellington Oval in a game that was reduced to 38 overs because of rain interruption.
Batting first, Cleveland reached their total losing just four wickets with Carlos Smith scoring 32 not out, A.Bascome 20, Courtney Trott 26 and Adams 18.
Craig Brangman led the Somerset bowlers with two for 34.
Despite being short of players the visitors came to within 11 runs of victory with skipper Wendell White stroking 47, Shaun Roberts 36 and Leon Place 16.
Forties clinched the Commercial Cricket League title yesterday despite a crushing nine-wicket defeat as their closest challengers, Watford Sports Club, lost by eight runs against Leg Trappers at the Royal Naval Field.
Forties, who mustered a paltry 63 against West Indian Association at Nationals, suffered their first defeat of the season but remained 16 points clear of Watford with only one round of matches left.
Albert Steede: match-winning 102 not out from just 104 balls.
