Financial crime seminar held on island

Skills honed: police and overseas delegates at a forum against terrorist financing (Photograph supplied)

Police have reinforced their expertise on investigating financial crime after the island hosted the seventh meeting of the Counter-Terrorist Financing Overseas Territories Forum.

The workshop, held from April 6 to 8, came with high-level delegates from the overseas territories as well as guest speaker Dawne Spicer, the executive director of the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force.

They were welcomed by Tom Oppenheim, the Acting Governor.

Specialists from the HM Treasury’s UK Technical Assistance Unit helped attendees build their understanding of the mitigation of terrorist financing risks, to protect communities and financial centres.

Officers from the Bermuda Police Service who attended included Detective Chief Inspector Jason Smith, Detective Inspector Leroy Mathurin and Detective Sergeant Crai-Che Hall.

Mr Smith said: “The experience gained at this forum will bolster the skills of these officers and by extension the entire Bermuda Police Service, as they relate to financial crime investigation.

“This is not only in terms of preventing terrorist financing, but also money laundering and other similar criminal activity.”
