Contraband potentially worth millions of dollars has been seized at Bermuda’s ports, police confirmed today.

Three foreign nationals were stopped at LF Wade International Airport and a cruise ship berth in Dockyard over several weeks of operations.

A police spokesman confirmed that a preliminary analysis identified samples of cocaine, heroin and cannabis resin.

The drug haul is being processed by a government analyser.

The spokesman said police were “deeply concerned” about efforts to bring “harmful substances into our community”.

He added: “The types and quantities of drugs seized in these recent attempts had the potential to cause significant harm to individuals and pose a serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of our society.”

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Nidol Barker, of the Special Investigations Department, said the seizures came from “ongoing, targeted efforts by law enforcement to detect and deter the trafficking of illicit drugs”.

He added: “The BPS will continue to work hand-in-hand with our colleagues at Customs to safeguard Bermuda’s borders from the importation of illicit substances.”

Lucinda Pearman, the Collector of Customs, said: “The customs department remains committed to securing Bermuda’s borders and preventing the importation of illegal drugs.

“These recent interdictions reflect the dedication and vigilance of our officers, who work tirelessly alongside the Bermuda Police Service to detect and disrupt smuggling activities.

“We will continue to strengthen our enforcement efforts and uphold our duty to protect the public from the dangers posed by illicit substances.”

Police reminded the public that community support was necessary in the fight against drugs.

The spokesman urged anyone with information on drug-related activity to contact police or the anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline, 800-8477.
