Shayla Cann scoops silver medal for Elon University
Shayla Cann and her Elon University team-mates captured a fourth Coastal Athletic Association Women’s Track & Field Championship title in five years on the back of another dominant display at North Carolina A&T.
The Bermudian was among her team’s distance runners who shone brightly at the meet, earning the silver medal in the women’s 800 metres with a new personal best time of 2min 07.89sec.
Cann eclipsed the 2:13.86 she achieved in her victory in the same discipline at the Phoenix Invitational meet in March, where she also won the 400 in 56.59, the tenth-fastest time in school history.
The 19-year-old, who was a member of Bermuda’s 1,600 metres relay team that won the bronze medal at the 2022 Carifta Games in Jamaica, has enjoyed considerable success since returning from a lower leg injury, which sidelined her for most of last season.
The Elon sophomore secured the bronze medal in the 800 at the Coastal Athletic Association Indoor Championships that capped her first full indoor season in fine style. Her time of 2:09.78 was the third-fastest time in school history.
Also earning trips to the podium at the recent Coastal Athletic Association Women’s Track & Field Championship were team-mates Mikayla Jones (16:52.74), Madison Synowiec (16:56.19) and Mariana Martinez (17:40.79), who produced an impressive sweep in the women’s 5,000 metres.
There was also joy for Lizzie Lopez, who was the top finisher in the heptathlon with 4,959 points, and Quinn Smith (4:23.42) and Sarah Petitjean (4:23.69), who earned the gold and silver in the women’s 1500 metres.
Elon University finished with 147 points, Hampton (122 points) in second and host North Carolina A&T (102 points) third to round off the overall podium at the championships.
