Nic Narraway lays down marker for nationals with victory
An innovative format brought the best out of professional cyclist Nic Narraway, who came out on top in the Bermuda Rouleurs Cycling Club Dual Stage Time-Trial on Sunday.
Narraway, who has been competing in Europe this year, is back on island for the Bermuda National Championships in a couple of weeks and showcased his burgeoning talent by beating Conor White.
The BRCC time-trial, held in St David’s, featured cyclists starting in Great Head Park and climbing Lighthouse Hill via Great Bay and Texas Road on stage one. After a quick relocation to Coopers Island Road, cyclists then lined up for a flat, fast out-and-back course that rewarded pacing, power, and aerodynamic focus.
Naturally suited to climbing it was no surprise that Narraway produced the fastest time of 1min 49.64sec on the hill climb, which gave him a 0.79sec advantage over White heading into stage two. Narraway extended that by 0.1sec when completing stage two in 1:55.84 for an overall time of 3:45.48.
White finished runner-up on 3:46.37 with junior Jackson Langley finishing third on 3:52.85. Dylan Eiselt, the only other rider in the A category, was fourth on 4:03.24.
Rhys Pearce, of Bermuda Roulers, won the B division and finished eighth overall on 4:34.37. Michael Terceira (4:42.62) and Sam Bullen (4:43.68) were second and third respectively.
Neil MacGuinness produced a good ride to take fifth overall and ride away with top honours in the C division after finishing with a combined time of 4:28.52. That was good enough to edge Tracy Wright (4:31.97) and Daniel Ringer (4:33.79) into the places.
The 13-14 age group was won by Spencer Haldeman (5:16.09), who finished ahead of Isla Cooze (5:49.93) and Zara Bule (6:01.76).
Colette Durkin beat the boys to win the 11-12 age group. Durkin’s combined time of 5:35.56, was 13 seconds quicker than runner-up Owen Fosker (5:48.03). Romy Drea finished third in 6:06.48.
