Events to mark Theatre Boycott anniversary
Two events are planned to mark 66 years since the conclusion of the island’s Theatre Boycott.
The Progressive Group organised the resistance, which ran from June 15 to July 1, 1959 and resulted in the desegregation of Bermuda’s theatres.
A statement said: “On July 2, 1959, all Bermudians could freely choose their seats in cinemas, affirming their essential humanity.
“After 350 years, this people’s movement opened Bermuda, creating a paradigm shift and that ‘domino’ eventually led to democracy for all.”
Two events on Wednesday will honour the anniversary — a gathering at City Hall from 12.30pm to 1.30pm will centre on the theme “open hearts, open minds”.
The statement added: “Those attending will break out into smaller groups to facilitate participation, encouraged to share insights from both personal experience and communal involvement.”
A skit exploring the same theme and the boycott’s legacy will be performed at Harbour Nights from 7pm to 7.40pm.
