Bermuda College aims to highlight successful tradesmen

The Bermuda College hopes to spotlight alumni who have started successful careers in skilled trades.

The Built to Last campaign will focus on graduates who have excelled in the technical, culinary and hospitality fields.

The college called for nominations from the public, all of whom will be presented at an event in October.

Necheeka Trott, the special projects head at the Bermuda College, said the campaign intended to “tell the stories of those who have built careers — and built Bermuda — with their hands, skills and vision”.

She added: “This campaign celebrates not only their success, but the transformative power of technical education.”

David Sam, the college president who started the campaign, said it reinforced the school’s commitment to excellence regardless of career path.

Dr Sam explained: “These alumni are people who have, quite literally, built Bermuda.

“It is through their endeavours and hard work that Bermuda is what it is today — and that is worthy of honour.”

He added: “Built to Last honours those whose achievements show that trade education is not only foundational, it’s aspirational.

“These are the individuals whose work we see, benefit from and rely on every day.

“While the use of artificial intelligence grows, AI is not about to pour concrete, wire a house or crawl under a sink to fix a leak.

“It is important to consider the trades as a career.”

The public have been asked to nominate Bermuda College alumni who serve as models for professional excellence, community service and leadership.

Nominees must have made a significant impact on their field or community, served as a leader or mentor, displayed high ethical standards, offered charitable services or served as an inspiration to present or future Bermuda College students.

Nominations will be open until July 11 and can be submitted through a form available on the Bermuda College website
