Daniel Phillips continued making a name for himself at the International Tennis Federation’s M15 tournament in Turkey on Thursday by booking a spot in the quarter-finals.

Phillips defeated No 7 seed Niklas Schell, from Germany, 6-4, 6-1, to set up a date with another German, the top-seeded Nino Ehrenschneider, in the last eight of the competition.

“It was a really good solid match for me,” the 20-year-old said. “It was windy and I used those conditions to my advantage. I served great and I hit high balls to keep him back.”

On his encounter with Ehrenschneider, Phillips is not reading much into his opponent’s ranking.

“I don’t think too much about seeds and anything like that,” the Bermudian said.

“I just think it’s another guy, the seeding doesn’t matter as I’ve shown coming from qualifying.

“When I’m on the court, I’m excited and grateful to be competing. I’m honoured that I get to represent not just myself, but my family and country with everyone supporting me, that’s what keeps me going.

“Whenever things get tough, I always remember that I’m out here having fun, and that brings me back.”

Meanwhile, Phillips is next month making a switch from Arizona State University to Tulane University.

Last December, the Davis Cup star was named as the first recipient of the Arizona State University Bermuda Scholarships but he has opted to make the switch to Tulane in New Orleans, Louisiana.
