Sunglasses thief sent to Drug Treatment Court
A man who stole a pair of sunglasses from Argus Optical has been ordered to participate in a drug treatment court programme.
Andre James, 42, admitted stealing the Ray-Ban glasses, valued at $475, as well as two charges of having drug equipment, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard that officers found James, from St George’s, with drug equipment made from wire mesh while arresting him for an unrelated matter on April 3, 2024.
James took the sunglasses from Argus Optical on June 10 of that year, three months after he stole another pair, valued at $479, from Bermuda Optical Company on Church Street.
James was found in possession of another piece of drug equipment, made from a glass bottle and steel wool, on Wednesday.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered reports to be written for James and that he attend Drug Treatment Court starting July 29. She released him on $3,000 bail until that time.
Ms Anderson ordered James to report to Hamilton Police Station daily and follow a 9pm to 6am curfew.
