Cup Match colts make meaningful impact

Luke Horan, Isaiah O’Brien and Zeri Tomlinson offered a glimpse of their potential during their Cup Match debuts at Wellington Oval.

St George’s all-rounder Horan claimed two wickets in the match, including the prized scalp of Kamau Leverock in Somerset’s second innings, and belted 20 from 15 balls in his team’s only turn at bat as they raced towards a declaration in the afternoon session on day two.

“Being a colt is something new to me and like nothing I have ever experienced before,” he said. I really enjoyed taking wickets and scoring a few runs.“

Horan toiled for 30 overs across the two days and was rewarded with a match haul of two for 84. He also held his own with the bat, smashing a six and two fours during his whirlwind innings and added 24 with Rawlins for the seventh wicket before the latter departed.

“I was bowling a hard line and length and wickets just came,” he said. “We also needed some quick runs and Delray and I had to go after it for a bit and it was good. It was pretty cool for my first time out there and the atmosphere was so good.”

Horan’s St George’s team-mate O’Brien managed two wickets, scored 11 runs and added 35 for the sixth wicket with Rawlins before he was caught by Somerset captain Terryn Fray off the bowling of Leverock.

More than anything else, the St David’s all-rounder was honoured to be following in the footsteps of great-grandfather Samuel Paynter, the oldest living Cup Match player at 96, and uncle George O’Brien, who both represented the East End club.

“It was an honour carrying on a legacy, that’s the most important part and the only thing that was going through my mind on this debut,” O’Brien said.

“It’s nothing to do with pressure and all to do with carrying on my family’s legacy. I got two wickets and I am proud of that. Unfortunately, I am disappointed a little bit with the bat, but I know that I can come back better, stronger and fitter next year.”

Somerset wicketkeeper Tomlinson stroked a disciplined and unbeaten 37 in his team’s second innings to compensate for a duck in his first trip to the crease on the first day.

He also featured in a 72-run sixth-wicket partnership with team stalwart Dion Stovell (37) as the match fizzled out to a draw. More importantly, he also managed to maintain his cool despite being the victim of some verbal bashing and intimidation by some St George’s players unhappy with his decision to move to Somerset after featuring for four years as a reserve for the East End side.

“After the first day I was pretty disappointed after getting a duck as I had been preparing for quite some time, but that’s how it goes, that’s cricket,” Tomlinson said.

The Bermuda Under-19 captain was denied his chance at getting a half century when stumps were drawn with ten overs of play left.

“I wanted the fifty but I am glad I got the not out,” Tomlinson said.

“I think sometimes when I look to score or get to fifty too quick I just throw my wicket away.

“If I was there after 11 overs I would have got there, but that’s just how it goes and maybe next year and in years to come I can score fifty and hopefully get some catches and stumpings.”

Two other colts appeared in Cup Match, with Alex Dore scoring four and 24 in his two innings for Somerset. Team-mate Dalin Richardson was out for a duck and four in his two efforts at bat.
