Two men were killed and a third was being treated in hospital after a daylight shooting on Court Street yesterday afternoon.

The Bermuda Police Service appealed for calm as they issued a description of the clothing worn by the riders of a dark-coloured motorbike and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Officers and other emergency crews responded to reports at about 4.40pm of multiple people injured in a shooting near the junction of Court Street and Dundonald Street.

The Bermuda Police Service said: “On arrival, officers and EMTs found an unresponsive male lying on the sidewalk, with members of the public providing assistance.

“Life-saving measures were immediately commenced, and the victim was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“Police subsequently confirmed that two other males injured in the incident had arrived at KEMH by private vehicle.

“One of these victims died while receiving treatment.

“The third male remains in hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower extremities.”

At the scene yesterday, Acting Detective Superintendent Jason Smith asked for the public’s help as police try to trace the suspects.

He said: “I know that it’s very emotive, given the circumstances — a shooting that has happened at 4.40pm on a busy street.

“We’re asking … for calm in our community and as the Bermuda Police Service conducts this investigation, we ask for your support.”

Mr Smith said it was believed that the bike came from the direction of Ewing Street, along Court Street then made a right turn and headed along Dundonald Street.

The BPS added later: “The suspects are described as two males on a dark-coloured motorcycle with a covered licence plate.

“The rider wore a black helmet with a balaclava, a long-sleeved blue top, grey trousers and tan-coloured boots.

“The pillion passenger, who is believed to be the shooter, wore a black full-face helmet and with a multicoloured top.”

Mr Smith said: “If you saw that and if you can identify those persons, and if you can give any information on the direction that the bike took, that is very, very important.”

He added that CCTV cameras in and around the area would be “very critical” in the investigation and that police were collecting footage.

Nicole Fox, who was at the scene shortly after the shooting, described the situation as “heartbreaking”.

She explained that her stepson, Clark Fox, 28, had been killed in a similar daylight shooting in March 2020, just north of the incident at a junction near Elliot Street.

Ms Fox said: “What are we actually doing? What’s going on that we have lives taken?

“People are walking around in fear. They don’t speak to one another, they’re afraid to go outside — and rightfully so. But how do we have this whole island being held hostage? “It just isn’t right.”

Ms Fox, who also lost her son, 25-year-old Ricco Furbert, during a double murder in 2013, is a founding member of Mothers on a Mission, a support group for those who lost loved ones to violence.

The group is set to have a motorcade on Saturday to protest violence and remember people who were murdered.

Now, Ms Fox said, “this is another mom I have to add to the list”.

She added: “We deserve to live. Somehow we need to take the guns out of these young people’s hands.

“It’s sad that another mother is mourning right now and my heart breaks for her.

“This is not right and something has to happen.”

Shawnette Easton, another woman who had lost family to gun violence, shared the sentiment.

She said: “It hurts me to know that people have to go through what I went through. It’s the worst feeling ever.”

Ms Easton said that she lost her cousin, Michael Phillips, who was shot near the Mid-Atlantic Boat Club in October 2012.

Anyone with information on yesterday’s incident was urged to call Acting Detective Inspector Anneka Donawa, on 717-2250 or to e-mail adonawa@bps.bm.

They can call the main police number on 295-0011, speak to a familiar officer or use the reporting portal at portal.police.bm.

Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 800-8477

The BPS added: “The Bermuda Police Service are aware of a video as well as an image of one of the victims at the scene, circulating on social media.

“If you receive such material, do not share it, instead, please delete it from your devices.”

The latest incident came as police continued to investigate a shooting that happened at Southampton Rangers Sports Club on Friday.

A 19-year-old man attended hospital for a gunshot wound as a result, the BPS confirmed later. He was treated and released.

Mr Smith said on Monday that, in the incident at about 8.20pm on Friday, a lone gunman walked in from South Road, and “indiscriminately shot at” a group of men gathered in an alleyway outside the club’s entrance.

The suspect in that case wore a black and grey jacket, black trousers and white sneakers, as well as a black helmet with a dark visor.
