Government celebrates youth in employment programmes
The Department of Workforce Development is celebrating the participation of 172 students in its youth employment programmes.
A spokesman for the department said that the initiative, designed to bridge the gap between education and “meaningful” employment, is part of the Government's ongoing efforts to equip young Bermudians with the tools, skills and confidence to thrive in the workforce.
From May 5 to August 29, 100 university students in the summer employment programme earned $600 a week while gaining experience across the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Students were placed in roles aligned with their academic studies and long-term career goals.
Placement fields included health, psychology, hospitality, environmental sciences and law.
In July, 72 high school students joined the summer internship programme, a four-week introduction to the professional world. It offered a $1,600 stipend upon completion.
The placements spanned a range of industries from IT and trades to youth development and legal services.
Chayse Tanner, a university student who participated in one of the placements, said: “The youth employment programme was exceptionally well organised and I’m truly grateful for how smoothly everything ran throughout the entire experience.
“My placement with the Bermuda Government's Department of Child and Family Services was a perfect fit. It challenged me and confirmed my career aspirations.
“The support from the workforce development team made me feel valued and I hope to return next summer.”
Both programmes were designed to enhance students’ academic learning through real-world application, and provide exposure to diverse industries and professional pathways.
They aim to build leadership, communication and decision-making skills, while encouraging civic engagement and career-focused goal setting.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, said: “The youth employment programme is more than a summer job, it's a foundation for future success.
“These experiences help our young people connect what they learn in the classroom to what's expected in the workplace.
“As a government, we are committed to ensuring that Bermuda's youth are equipped, confident and ready to succeed.”
