Liverpool legend John Barnes in the house for World Cup showdown

Former Liverpool and England winger John Barnes is visiting the island this weekend

Football legend John Barnes is expected to grace the World Cup qualifier between Bermuda and Jamaica tonight.

Barnes, who was born in Jamaica but played 79 times for England, is on island this weekend to impart his football expertise and he will be heading straight from the airport to Flora Duffy Stadium with his flight due to arrive late afternoon.

The Royal Gazette understands that Barnes, who played more than 300 times for Liverpool, is visiting as a result of his association with Bermuda legend Clyde Best’s documentary, Transforming the Beautiful Game, The Clyde Best Story.

Barnes is featured in the film, which is expected to premiere in March 2026 just before the Fifa World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Bermuda Football Association has invited Barnes to the Jamaica game and is happy to host him on island.

“The Bermuda Football Association is proud to announce that former Liverpool and England international, John Barnes, will be in Bermuda this weekend,” the BFA said.

“Barnes will attend the Bermuda versus Jamaica match and take part in a round-table discussion with the island’s coaches, sharing his experience and insight with our football community.”
