Back to school church service offers bread to families
Families have been invited to a back-to-school church service where attendees stand to receive free loaves of bread.
The Greater Smith Hill Church, in Pembroke, will host the Fresh Start Sunday service this weekend, where pupils and their families will be wished the best on their return to classes.
The Right Reverend Lloyd Duncan, who leads the church, said the service was important for community building and giving families guidance.
He added: “These are complex times in Bermuda, as everyone is aware.
“Back when I was growing up, there was a lot more civility and a lot less violence going on.
“I think the church still has a major role to play in reminding people that, as long as we turn to God, there is still a way out.”
Public schools are expected to return to class on Tuesday.
Bishop Duncan said that the move was inspired by a similar service his Smith’s church put on at the end of the school year.
He said that a teacher would be present to tell incoming pupils about the importance of getting a good education.
He added that the service would include singing, art and dramatic performances.
Bishop Duncan encouraged members to bring a loaf of bread to donate to the church.
He said that these loaves would be offered to families to assist with breakfasts and lunches for the coming school week.
The Fresh Start Sunday service will be held on Sunday at 11am, at the Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church, Crawl, Hamilton Parish.
