Forecast suggests storm may pass east of island
The seventh named system of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has become Tropical Storm Gabrielle, with the latest projections that it may past east of Bermuda as it develops.
The Bermuda Weather Service said weather models suggested that the storm may pass to the east of the island as it approaches early next week.
However, it added: “Significant uncertainty remains regarding the path and strength of the system during this period as it interacts with weak ridging to the north.”
In an update at 6am, the BWS said Gabrielle was about 1,233 miles southeast of Bermuda and expected to be 424 miles southeast of the island at its closest point over the next three days, at 6am on Sunday.
The BWS said that models projected the storm to pass the island as a Category 1 hurricane by Monday afternoon.
Gabrielle is travelling through the central tropical Atlantic at about 14mph in a west-northwesterly direction.
It carries winds with a maximum speed of a little more than 51mph, with gusts topping 63mph.
The BWS said weak surface troughs ahead of the developing storm may send some blustery showers onto the island.
The National Hurricane Centre, in its latest update, said Gabrielle continues to struggle in the Central Atlantic and consists of a swirl of low-level clouds.
It explained: “The atmospheric conditions are expected to remain hostile for a couple more days, so it seems likely that Gabrielle will either hold steady or lose strength during that time.
“However, the models suggest that the storm could move into more conducive conditions late in the weekend and early next week, which should cause Gabrielle to become more symmetric and strengthen.”
It said residents in Bermuda should continue to monitor the storm over the next few days.
