Police detain two for knife offences, another for drugs
A man and a woman were both arrested over the weekend after they were found with knives in separate incidents.
A police spokesman said that about 1.25am on Sunday, officers were travelling west on East Broadway in Hamilton when they saw a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed in the same direction.
“Officers followed the vehicle and caused it to stop on Frog Lane, near the junction with Devon Lane, Devonshire,” the spokesman said.
“An officer informed the rider, a 25-year-old female, that she was stopped due to her manner of riding. Checks showed she had outstanding warrants, for which she was subsequently arrested.
“A search of the motorcycle she was riding led to the recovery of a knife from under the seat. The subject was further arrested for possession of a knife in a public place and transported to Hamilton Police Station.”
The police spokesman said that a few hours earlier, at about 10.30pm on Saturday, police were conducting stop-and-search checks on Parsons Road in Pembroke when they pulled over a 19-year-old male rider near the junction with Fentons Drive.
During the stop, the teenager admitted having a knife under his bike seat. He was subsequently arrested and the knife was seized.
The arrests were two of several made over the weekend as the Bermuda Police Service executed a “comprehensive weekend policing plan” under the direction of Acting Chief Inspector Anthony Smith of the tactical operations division.
Officers also executed a search warrant at a residence on St Monica’s Road in Pembroke at 9.35pm on Friday.
“During the search, officers located and recovered several items liable for seizure including a quantity of suspected controlled drugs,” the spokesman said.
“A 24-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. He was further arrested on active warrant.”
At 1.35am on Sunday, police responded to a report of a motor car stopped on Harbour Road near the junction with Tamarind Vale in Warwick.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle with its engine running, lights on and the male driver asleep in the driver’s seat.
“On speaking with driver, officers smelled intoxicants,” the spokesman said. “The officers noted his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.
“He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
The spokesman also noted the previously reported arrest of a 19-year-old male suspect for the murder of Janae Minors and the attempted murder of an 18-year-old male.
All arrested individuals will be appearing before the courts.
The spokesman added: “The public are reminded, if you wish to avoid being inconvenienced during stop-and-search operations, you must ensure that all documents required for legally operating a vehicle on the island’s roads are in order.
“Members of the public are further urged to comply with officers while they are carrying out their lawful duties, and not to interfere with police operations.”
