Belmont Hills aceboys revel in magical moment
Kenny Stone and Andrew Gracie had plenty of exciting news to share with the rest of their colleagues in the clubhouse after carding back-to-back holes-in-one at Belmont Hills Golf Club.
Stone was the first to achieve the rare feat for the first time in his career when his tee shot with an eight-iron landed below the flag at the par-three 4th hole and rolled into the cup — much to his astonishment.
“At first I wasn’t sure if it was in because the hole was shaded a bit. But when I walked up and saw that it was in I said ‘oh great’, and that was it,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“It was probably one of the few times I’ve hit the green on the fly. Usually I hit it and it rolls up or rolls back, and this actually landed on the green and rolled into the hole.
“Anytime anyone gets a hole-in-one they are very, very lucky because when you hit the green, the ball can go anywhere.”
The 75-year-old would have never achieved the feat that day had he not filled in for an absent player.
“Kenny wasn’t even intending to play. He turned up to just walk the course with us and feed his duck friends around the course,” Bermuda Seniors Golf Society captain John Tartaglia said.
“But when one of our other regular golfers was unable to play, Kenny stepped in to make up the third foursome. A deserved reward for a great guy!”
Lightning struck twice moments later when Gracie duplicated the feat with a pitching wedge playing in the group immediately behind Stone.
“It took one bounce, second bounce and straight in the hole,” he said.
“I was like, ‘Did I see that?’ There was no ball on the green, so in the hole.
“It was great fun and always nice to get something good on the golf course which keeps you going.”
It was the second time the 72-year-old has made a hole-in-one on the same hole at Belmont and the third overall, having also achieved the feat at Turtle Hill Golf Club.
