The family of a 16-year-old rider who lost his life in July to a collision with a car on a narrow road traversing woodland in Devonshire have welcomed a pledge from Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, that “multiple options” were being assessed for Parsons Lane.

Mr Adams gave his “deepest condolences to the family of young Josh Frias”, adding: “Losing a loved one, especially someone so young, is an unimaginable tragedy and my heart goes out to all who are grieving.”

The minister was responding to calls by the Frias family to make the lane a one-way route in the wake of several deaths — a suggestion that got support from Roger Todd, the chief executive of Bermuda Waterworks Ltd, which is headquartered on the road.

Mr Todd told The Royal Gazette that the company welcomed an assessment of the road by highway engineers, noting that the one-way options had been considered before and would be supported by BWL.

After Mr Todd’s remarks, Mr Adams acknowledged concerns raised by the Frias family and others in the community about the road’s record for accidents.

He added: “Road safety is an issue that affects every Bermudian family, and the ministry takes these concerns very seriously.

“The Government is committed to reviewing areas of concern across our road network, including Parsons Lane, to determine what improvements may be appropriate.

“In fact, we are reviewing multiple options for Parsons Lane, including the possibility of converting it into a one-way system and additional safety measures.”

Mr Adams said the Government has liaised with BWL, which he said had implemented “some works along the exits and entrances to improve sightlines”.

In reply yesterday, the Frias family offered “heartfelt thanks to the minister for his kind words and sincere condolences following the tragic loss of young Josh Frias”.

A statement added: “We are deeply moved by the compassion shown and the seriousness with which the ministry is addressing the concerns raised by our family and the community.

“We welcome the opportunity to meet with the minister to further discuss the proposed safety improvements to Parsons Lane.

“It is our hope that through continued dialogue and collaboration, meaningful changes can be made to help prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of all who travel this road.”

The family called on the community to “continue voicing their concerns and ideas, as together we can work towards a safer Bermuda for everyone”.
