An annual campaign to support war veterans, widows and other soldiers was launched this week when a poppy was presented to the Governor.

Andrew Murdoch received the symbolic adornment from the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s Honorary Colonel David Gibbons yesterday.

It marked the beginning of Bermuda’s annual Poppy Appeal, which raises funds for former and serving soldiers in need.

Poppies can be obtained from locations around the City of Hamilton today and tomorrow.

Residents were also reminded that the Remembrance Day parade is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, to commemorate those who fell in the two world wars and other campaigns of the Allied Forces.

The ceremony gets under way at 10.30am on Front Street.

Wreaths will be laid at the Cenotaph by Mr Murdoch, David Burt, the Premier, and other dignitaries.

A government spokeswoman said: “The Royal Bermuda Regiment, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary year, will support the ceremony with a guard on parade and will be joined in the parade by the Bermuda Police Service, the sea cadets and the [RBR] Junior Leaders.

“Music for the ceremony will be provided by the RBR Band and Corps of Drums, the Somerset Brigade Band, the Salvation Army Divisional Band, the North Village Band and the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band.”

The parade will result in road closures on Tuesday morning and motorists were encouraged to consider alternative routes to avoid delays.

Holiday trash collection schedule

Household waste will not be collected on the Remembrance Day holiday on November 11.

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment advised that waste usually collected on Tuesdays will instead be lifted on Wednesday, starting a “rollover” collection schedule, finishing with waste usually picked up on Fridays instead being collected on Saturday.

A ministry spokesman said: “This is a recycling collection week and the recycling collection days will remain unchanged, with West End collection on Thursday and East End collection on Friday.”

Household waste and recycling can also be taken to the Tynes Bay waste-to-energy facility public drop-off, which will be open on Tuesday from 9am to midday, reverting after to its regular hours of 7am to 7pm every day.
