Walkabout brings thousands to celebrate in St George
The streets of St George were bustling with activity last night when the Bermuda National Trust Christmas Walkabout returned.
Thousands of people descended on the town for the longstanding festive event, exploring historic homes, visiting shops and enjoying a wealth of entertainment options.
Addressing the crowd in King’s Square, Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, said he was honoured to be a part of his first walkabout, stating that the Town of St George looked fantastic.
He said: “This place is special. It is a [Unesco] World Heritage Site for good reason, and we are all very fortunate to be here in this absolutely gorgeous town.”
Adrienne Smatt said the event was a great opportunity to gain exposure for her business, Adrienne Smatt Designs, and showcase some of the handcrafted items she has for sale.
She said: “I don’t have a storefront, so it’s great when people like Kristin White invite us out to sell our wares and show our faces and what we are good at.
“People are in the holiday spirit. They are liking the cedar ornaments and the cedar magnets. I make it all myself and I think people like that.”
Ms Smatt added that she was impressed by the turnout to the event, saying: “We have a lot of foot traffic. It’s a great location here outside of Long Story Short and the Arcades and there is a tonne of people.
“I don’t know if this is the largest walkabout yet, but there are a lot of people and really just a good, happy crowd.”
Troy Ingham said that while he rarely makes the trek to St George’s, the walkabout is always a worthwhile experience.
He said: “It’s a bit like Cup Match where you can’t walk for five minutes without seeing someone you haven’t caught up with all year.
“It’s really a great way to start the holiday season. The town looks great with the Christmas lights up. There are people everywhere.
“The mood is high. The eggnog probably helps.”
Aaron Jesmond, from New York, said he had been encouraged to come out by friends on the island.
He said: “I knew I wanted to check out St George’s, and they said this is probably the best time of the year to do it.
“Everything is just beautiful; the people have been really welcoming. It’s a great experience.”
Mr Jesmond added: “It reminds me a bit of the Christmas markets in Europe with the historic buildings and the holiday atmosphere, but it’s smaller and more intimate.”
Robbie Godfrey said the festive atmosphere in St George was amazing.
He said: “The walkabout is something that I haven’t done in a few years. The last time was just after Covid-19 and I forgot how wonderful it is to see everyone out and about enjoying themselves.
“Everyone is so welcoming. People opening up their houses to anyone. How cool is that?”
Kate Farmer added that she was excited to happen upon activities around the town.
She said: “We stumbled across a fantastic free concert by the Bermuda School of Music in St Peter’s Church.
“It’s really just lovely. It’s been great.”
