The Bermuda Airport Authority’s popular weather radar is up and running again after undergoing repairs.

Lester Nelson, chief executive of the BAA, said that the body’s technical team had worked closely with engineers from Leonardo, the manufacturer of the radar system, over the holiday period to address a series of technical issues.

He said: “This effort reflects a small part of the continuous, behind-the-scenes work that is necessary to maintain the reliability of this complex system.

“As a precaution and in line with best practice, the system will continue to be closely monitored over the coming weeks in collaboration with our external partners to support sustained performance and stability.”

Mr Nelson thanked the public for their patience and the team for their commitment to complete the project over the holidays.

“We remain focused on maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence, resilience and transparency,” he said.

“The weather radar remains a key tool within a range of meteorological systems which are used by the Bermuda Weather Service to produce a suite of meteorological products and services, and the BAA is continually reviewing leading-edge technologies in order to more effectively serve the Bermuda public and aviation users, in line with our corporate mission.

“As weather radar and weather product delivery systems continue to evolve, the BAA is committed to providing continuous improvement for our customers.”

The radar, accessible through the BWS website, went offline in October in advance of the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

The BAA said at that time technical teams were working with the system vendor in Germany to bring the system back into full service and that replacement parts were hoped to be on island before the end of the year.

The Doppler radar system was commissioned in October 2019 and is about a third of the way through its 15-year life cycle.

However, the system has encountered technical challenges on several occasions, including a month-long outage in October 2024 and an outage this year sparked by an intermittent technical fault.
