Young players eager to impress national coaches
Some of Bermuda’s most exciting young talents are excited to showcase their ability and attract the attention of national coaches in two matches against Portland Hearts of Pine.
Joshua Joseph, La Zai Outerbridge and Kydan Browne are part of the team gearing up to face the USL League One club in two friendly matches at Flora Duffy Stadium on Thursday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm.
“I’ve been waiting patiently for an opportunity like this to come,” Joseph told The Royal Gazette.
“Now it’s just about seizing the opportunity and giving the coaches a hard job when it comes to selection.
“I’m looking to just make an impression on the coaches and show them why I should be there. I want to show them why I should be selected in future camps or future tournaments.
“Training’s been of high intensity and we have some senior players that are helping me along the way because this is my first camp. I’m just getting used to it and I’ve been asking questions to the senior players that have been there and looking to learn at each and every training session.”
Outerbridge, who was arguably the best player on the pitch when Dandy Town defeated North Village on New Year’s Day to retain the Friendship Trophy, is anticipating tough assignments against the American side.
“I’m focused on showing the quality that I have and the potential that I have to break into the national team and take my football to the next level.
“I know we’re playing harder opponents, but this is an opportunity to play in front of the coaches and show them that I can take that next step.
“Hopefully, I'm not too far away from representing Bermuda. I believe in myself and I think I could play at that level, but I guess we’ll see in these two matches.”
Browne, the youngest member of the squad, is eager to further sharpen his skills. The Devonshire Cougars midfielder has never represented Bermuda at any level.
“I’m just looking to improve,” the 18-year-old said.
“Playing with this team is definitely going to make me improve and understand the game more and how fast and intense it moves at a different level.
“Its been great training with the senior players. It’s different from training with the club team as it’s more intense and they help you get better, give you instructions and help you develop.”
Joseph, whose main position is left wing, has cut short his stay at English club, Cheadle Heath Nomads, who play in the North West Counties League. The Thomas College graduate is finishing off the season with PHC.
“I was only at Cheadle Heath Nomads for six months and now I’m home until the end of the season,” he said.
“In May I am going to play in a summer league in Chicago, I’ll be there until August or September. If I do well there, there’s a chance to go for trials in Portugal.”
Outerbridge has taken a break from pursuing his undergraduate studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He will be with Town until the conclusion of the season.
“I go to college in New York and it’s an NCAA Division III programme,” he said.
“I’m actually taking the semester off to be home to spend time with family and sort of recharge. I’m just doing my undergraduate degree and playing football at the same time.”
Browne, formerly with Wolves, has been one of the standout players for Cougars this season. Having come off the FC Bascome development programme, the teenager feels that his football has improved under Mark Mills.
“I just feel like it’s a better overall team,” he said.
“I’m surrounded by better players with more technical ability, which has helped me improve my game.”
