Inmate admits assaulting prison officer
A prison inmate who hit a corrections officer in the face will be sentenced in Magistrates’ Court next month.
Tyrone Butterfield Jr, 22, admitted causing a prison officer bodily harm when he appeared in court yesterday.
The court heard that Butterfield hit the officer, who placed his breakfast on the table at Westgate Correctional Facility, on August 17, 2024.
Butterfield, from Pembroke, immediately apologised to the officer and said he thought he was his cellmate.
The officer, who sustained facial swelling in the incident, treated the injury with painkillers, as Hurricane Ernesto prevented him from attending King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
Butterfield was arrested for the offence last February and has been remanded in connection with the incident since August.
Sara Tucker, for Butterfield, told the court yesterday that the assault was “dealt with internally” and that her client had lost privileges at Westgate as a result.
Magistrate Auralee Cassidy ordered reports be written for Butterfield and remanded him in custody until March 25, when he should be sentenced for the offence.
