House: Opposition’s Budget comeback to dominate day
The One Bermuda Alliance gets its Reply to the Budget today in the House of Assembly as legislators brace for two weeks of sifting through the details of the closing fiscal year — and the road map for 2026-27.
Otherwise, MPs have little to debate beyond the Auxiliary Bicycles (Project Ride) Amendment Bill 2026, tweaking the learner’s programme for young people headed on to the roads. The Bill also amends the rules for visitors who meet “specified residency‑related criteria”.
Three government Bills will be tabled for debate at the next sitting — including ride-sharing legislation.
However the Order of Business is heavy on ministerial statements. Zane DeSilva, the housing minister, will speak on the Bermuda Housing Trust’s latest financials and its outlook for 2026-27.
Mr DeSilva is scheduled to update the House on the Morgan’s Point Development Company’s work over this year and the one ahead.
Tinée Furbert, as acting education minister, will speak on the 2026 Government Scholarship and Awards programme. In her youth, social development and seniors capacity, she will address the 2024-25 report for the Department of Financial Assistance.
Now that public consultation on reforming the island’s jury system has come to a close, Dennis Lister III, the Junior Minister of Justice, will deliver a statement on the process.
Kim Wilson, the health minister, will address “ensuring fair competition and preventing market concentration” in healthcare — followed by moves in the community to address youth mental health needs.
Jason Hayward, the economy and labour minister, will update legislators on the youth employment strategy, and speak on an item to be tabled for later debate: the Employment Amendment Act 2026.
Jaché Adams, the public works and environment minister, is listed for two statements: on road paving and the refurbishment of the Swing Bridge in St George’s — and the introduction of the marine resources enforcement strategy.
Owen Darrell is to speak on modernising car legislation in his transport capacity, followed by a brief to MPs on the Caribbean Tourism Organisation forum held on the island this week, under his tourism portfolio.
Diallo Rabain, Cabinet Office minister also responsible for digital innovation, will speak on partnerships for the team to digitise government services — and update the House on plans to reform the island’s electoral procedures.
