“As my favourite constituent in C18, I wish you a very happy birthday and good health in the days ahead.”

Ms Burgess was born on February 23, 1926 on Serpentine Road in Paget, to Doris and Oswald Braithwaite.

Her parents emigrated from Barbados, with her father working as an engineer at an ice cream factory in Hamilton.

Ms Burgess attended St Alban’s School, the precursor to West Pembroke Primary School, before becoming a seamstress like her mother.

The centenarian celebrated her birthday on February 22 with loved ones who travelled from the US, UK and Canada.

The following day, she had breakfast with a more intimate family group while she was serenaded by saxophonist Aaron Spencer.

She was joined by her children, Eunice Hart and Steven Burgess, as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
