Triathlon stars honoured at awards ceremony
Bermuda’s triathlon community were out in force at Cambridge Beaches on Saturday night at the sport’s annual awards ceremony.
Erica Hawley and Nick Pilgrim picked up one of the biggest honours of the night after being named best overseas triathletes.
Hawley recorded back-to-back podium finishes in World Cup races in Canada last summer and in October, she competed in the Elite World Championship Grand Final in Wollongong, Australia, where she finished 28th place against the best female triathletes in the world.
Pilgrim, in his first season after university, competed in six major overseas races on the World Triathlon professional circuit in North America, South America and Europe. He also returned home to win the Liberty Mutual Sprint National Championships before a training accident late in the year put paid to any more competitions in 2025. He has also qualified to represent Bermuda in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in August.
Rory Shepherd and Naomi MacGuinness were crowned best junior triathletes after a string of fantastic performances.
Shepherd picked up two gold medals in the 13 to 15 age group at the Carifta Triathlon & Aquathlon Championships in Tobago and finished fourth at the Clermont Florida Draft and East Coast Triathlon Festival in Richmond, Virginia.
MacGuinness won two gold medals, one in triathlon and one in aquathlon, in the 11 to 12 age group at Carifta and won a silver medal in the mixed team relay. She also has excelled out of her age group, finishing thirteenth in an older age group at Clermont Legal.
Jackson Langley and Maddie Durkin were named best local triathletes. Langley finished second in the national championships and was made captain of the Carifta team. He also finished second to Olympian Tyler Smith in the Cambridge Beaches Sprint Triathlon.
Durkin was the female home in the sprint national championships and was on the winning AIG team at the mixed team relay national championships. Internationally she competed in the Western Mass 70.3 Half Ironman, finishing first and securing a spot in the world championships in Spain, but injury prevented her competing in that event.
The Most Improved awards were given to Luke Hyland and Lesley Jane Smith, with Mike Evans and Esme Davidge taking home the best newcomer honours.
The Jim Butterfield Long Service Award was given to Geoff Smith, who has served on the Bermuda Triathlon Association executive for 15 years, while the prestige of being named Club Person of the Year went to Alec Shepherd
Four special achievement awards were handed out, with Ashley Couper and Marie-Lyne Dore both recognised for competing in the Lake Placid Ironman and the Ironman Grand Final in Hawaii.
McGuinness and Shepherd were both honoured again for their Carifta performances and forming part of the winning Carifta Triathlon team
