Kallan Richardson put himself in contention to win the Legends Series by clinching the Ray Swan 8K on Sunday.

Richardson, who finished second to Dennis Mbelenzi in the Ludwig Cann 10K last month, crossed the finish line at Shelly Bay Park in 26min 56sec. Oliver Brunnock was second in 28:00 and a time of 28:14 placed veteran Shannon Lawrence in third.

Maddie Durkin was the first female in 30:24 to finish eighth overall. She was followed by Estienne Coetzee (31:13), the winner of the Ludwig Cann 10K, while Stepanka Sprincova secured third position in 32:14.

Richardson was pleased with his effort as he gears up to mount a serious challenge for the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby.

“I was able to go out at a good pace and keep it pretty much still at the end,” Richardson told The Royal Gazette.

“Overall, the weather was good and I was feeling pretty good, so I’m happy with the results. It shows good progress towards the rest of the season, so happy to see where it can go from here.

“We started out in a pack of three with Oliver Brunnock and Sanchez Smith. I was able to hold a solid pace and break away from them in the first 2km.

“From there, we’re just holding strong throughout the finish. The 8K is a quick race, but it’s definitely pretty painful because you’re going out at a solid pace and you have to hold it for a while.

“I was happy with how I was able to pull through, especially in the second half of the race, when it starts to get a bit more hilly, coming through Flatts.

“Being able to hold a solid pace and keep it through the finish strong. I was able to keep it controlled even after that first mile and keep it solid through the finish.”

While he is committed to running the last race of the series, the Sir Stanley Burgess 5K on May 3, Richardson is still yet to come to a decision if he is entering the Ed Sherlock 8K that was postponed from February 8 to April 4, due to bad weather.

“I’m happy with how it’s going in the series for me,” the 20-year-old said.

“I need to decide if I’m going to do the third race or not. Most definitely, we’ll do the last one, the 5K, as a quicker tune-up before May 24, so we’ll see how the training develops.”

A week after running 1:21:32 at the United Airlines New York City Half-Marathon, Durkin entered her first race on the island this season.

“It was great to be back racing locally again and I’m happy with my effort,” Durkin said.

“My body and energy system are in a good place right now. My coach, Alex Waldauer, is really dialling in on my fitness goals while helping me to stay healthy and keep a stable immune system which had historically been a major obstacle for me.

“Training with my Synergy team continues to pay dividends. I look forward to more fun local participation and competition in the months ahead.

“Thank you to Mid Atlantic Athletic Club and the organisers of the event. It was another great day where our running community could shine.”

Brunnock used the race as part of his preparation for the Toronto Half-Marathon at the beginning of May.

“I think I went off pretty hard and tried to stay with Kallan for as long as possible,” he said.

“When we got to 2K mark I thought this was probably a bit quick for me. So I kind of tried to hold as short of a gap as possible, I tried to run my own race really for the last part of it.

“It felt like the majority of the race I just ran solo as I didn’t really see anyone else. I was trying to just wait until I could see Shelly Bay and I knew I was nearly there then once I was out of Flatts.

“I’m doing a half marathon in Toronto with the Grateful Miles Run Club on May 3. This was kind of like a bit of training for that.

“I’m really looking forward to that, there’s about 25 of us going to that race from Bermuda.”

Two weeks before he represents Bermuda in the 3,000 metres at the Carifta Games in Grenada, Sanchez Smith finished an impressive fourth in 28:59.

“It feels great to finish fourth,” the 15-year-old said.

“I was obviously the youngest and going into this race my strategy was to focus on the first two miles because I’m going to Carifta on April 1.

“I compete on the Sunday and I’m doing 3,000, so the first two miles of this race was the focus. I came through at 10:50 and my goal was eleven minutes so I got my goal.

“Kallan Richardson’s very fast and older than me, so I didn’t really expect to beat him. I was part of the leading pack for the first few miles and they left me.”
