A couple of teams made flying starts to the new powerboat season at Ferry Reach on Sunday.

Ryan Resendes and Jahcai Morris swept both of the 25-minute heats in B class, while Brandon DeSilva and Blake Burgess replicated that feat in A class.

Resendes admits he had doubts racing would go ahead due to the breezy and choppy conditions, which put the drivers’ skills to the test.

“I was expecting the race committee to call the race by the end of the week due to the winds,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“But they ended up going on with it and I am grateful they did not cancel the race day.

“It was rough, it was windy, it was choppy and I definitely have to say it came down to driving that day.”

Resendes was also thankful to have been given the opportunity to drive Morris’ boat.

“I would like to thank Jahcai, who let me drive his boat, so a big shout out to him,” he said.

“The boat that I normally drive is not ready yet and will only be ready for the next race, so Jahcai let me drive his boat.

“It was a great race and a pretty good turnout for the first race of the season. Thank you to the committee for hosting the event and I am looking forward to the next race.”

The father and son team of Jody and Tony Carreiro and Steven Meireles and Tyler Smith rounded off the top three B class finishers in the opening heat.

Meireles and Smith went one better to take second in the remaining B class heat with the Carreiros settling for third this time around.

DeSilva was also delighted to achieve the sweep and get his team’s quest for the national Championship off on the right foot.

“All in all it was a good first race day,” he said. “This is going to be our first full season in an A-class boat.

“We’re aiming to get the season championship in that class for the first time. So it was a great start to our season with two first places and claiming a lot of points to start off the season.

“We had our boat set up for some rough water and are happy with our end result. We had a good turnout. Fans came down to Ferry Reach to watch the inshore races and that’s always a fan favourite.”

Shane Madeiros and Errin Butterfield and the grandfather and grandson team of Chris and Jacari Marshall took second and third in the A class in the opening heat.

The Marshalls were the only other team that competed in the remaining A class heat as Madeiros and Butterfield were ruled through mechanical issues.

Howard Ascento and Nasaje Anderson, the only team in D class on the day, were the overall winners in the first heat but did not finish the second also as a result of mechanical issues.
