Early champions crowned at Kim Burns Memorial tournament
The Kim Burns Memorial Pickleball Tournament has already crowned some champions.
Despite the tournament lasting almost a week and continuing until Thursday, WER Joell Stadium hosted plenty of play over the weekend with a number of players heading into the new week with a spring in their step after taking home medals and trophies.
Ni Made (Ari) Suwariani and Savira Qonital Wahyuning took top honours in the Women’s 3.0 Doubles (open), beating Kirsten Wideman and Ana Abend 7-11, 11-2, 11-7 in the final. Pamela Bardill and Amy Hayes won bronze after beating Melanie Claude and Raveena Nayyar 11-7, 7-11, 11-3.
In the Women’s 3.0 Doubles (50+) final, Kerri McKittrick and Frances Kyrikos beat Ruth Stovell and Angela Edwards 8-11, 11-3, 11-4.
Pearl Ingram and Ivanne Demiar won gold in the Women’s 3.5 doubles (Open) after defeating Sarah Fox and Sue Chiappa 11-6, 11-8 in the final. Laverne Stowe and Cayla Cross took home the bronze medal
Fox and Chiappa went one place better in the Women’s 3.5 Doubles (50+), with Julie Matthews-Borchardt and Becky Bart finishing second.
The Mens 3.0 Doubles (Open) competition was won by Virbert Virbert and Arthur Begeman, who won the final 11-4, 13-11 against Eric Jasper and Peter Vicente. Jonah MacGuinness and Jack Walsh were third. Zach Sagers and Kevin Rhyno captured the Mens 3.0 Doubles (50+) title
Donn Trott and Damien McDonnell claimed bragging rights in the Mens 3.5 Doubles, defeating Theodosios Caimassidis and Harry Andrews 11-7, 11-7 in the final. Israel Sanchez and Duane Simons won bronze.
In the Mens 3.5 Doubles (50+) Tim McKittrick and Jan Brewer took top honours, with Peter Illston and Tom Brown second and Terry Madeiros and Michael Heslop third.
Fiona Donaldson was on the top spot on the podium after beating Alexis Lodge 15-9, 15-8 in the Womens 3.5 Singles (Open) final. Jasmine Delgado finished third.
In the Womens 3.5 Singles (50+) division, Emma Simmons won gold, with Melanie Claude and Becky Bart winning silver and bronze medals respectively.
Lucy Yiasoumi got the better of Naphisa Smith to win the Womens 4.0 Singles (Open) title, with Ailish Byrne third.
