Andre Lambe loses belt after being stopped in second round
Andre “Showtime” Lambe has lost his American Boxing Organisation North American belt after being stopped in the second round of his title fight in Galveston, Texas, last night.
Lambe was sent to the canvas twice in round two by his American opponent Price Sparrow before the referee stopped the contest with 1min 24 sec of the round left and the Bermudian unsteady on his legs and looking over to his corner.
Defeat for Lambe ends his unbeaten professional record, which stood at 13-0 before last night’s fight. The heavy-hitting Sparrow took his record to 3-0.
A few hours after the fight Lambe took to social media to reassure his fans that he was fine after the defeat.
“First up I’d like to thank God that I’m OK and still able to go home to see another day,” Lambe said.
“I also would like to thank my sponsors for continually supporting me and giving me the opportunity to represent my country at the highest level.
“Every time I step in the ring I put everything on the line and you win some and you lose some. I have so much to thank God for, that I can’t be upset.
“This sport teaches you a lot about life and how to handle adversity, stay humble in victory and keep your head up in defeat.
“Tonight wasn’t the result I was working for, but I leave knowing I gave it everything I had. I’ll take the lessons, make the necessary adjustments and continue to grow as a fighter and as a person.
“Thank you to my coaches, my team-mates, family, friends and everyone who continues to support me through the highs and lows. Your belief in me means more than words can express. This is just another chapter in the journey.
“The mission remains the same. Thank you for all your support and thank God for every blessing and lesson along the way.”
It was also a frustrating day for Lambe’s compatriots Adrian Roach and Saundre “Dash” Simmons, whose fights in the US last night were both cancelled when their opponents pulled out late on.
Roach was scheduled to fight on the same card as Lambe against Jerrell Mayweather, who failed to make the weight on Friday night, but although the bout was still set to take place, the American pulled out of the contest on Saturday.
It is the second straight time that Roach has been left frustrated by the late withdrawal of an opponent after his match was cancelled at late notice in North Carolina in March.
Simmons was set to put his unbeaten 9-0 record on the line against veteran Cleotis “Mookie” Pendarvis in North Carolina but will now have to wait for another opportunity after the bout was cancelled.
